The Havering Youth Games (karate) are due to be held on Saturday 26th April at Harrow Lodge Sports Centre from 1200. Organised by Sensei Dick Burridge of Shuhari-Kai, this forms part of the overall Havering Youth Games in which the borough selects representatives from different sports to represent Havering at the London Youth Games. If you live in Havering and are 6th kyu or above and in school years 6 to 12, then you can take part.

For kata there are male and female places up for grabs at school years 6-9 and school years 10-12.

For kumite there are male and female places up for grabs as follows;

Boys 30-40kg, 40-45kg, 45-50kg, 50-55kg, 55-60kg, 65-70kg and over 70kg.

Many thanks to Holman's Chief Executive, Andrew Holman, for this very generous gesture.

Club Funds 15th January 2008

GRO Ishinryu would like to thank everyone who has recently supported our fund raising events. As a result we were able to pay for students who attended the Ticky Donovan grading classes during November and December 2007.  We are very proud of our students when they are achieving and try to help where we can.

In the past we have met the costs of the main National and Association competition events and have also been able to purchase training equipment for all to benefit from.  Unfortunately, some of this equipment was loaned out a few years ago and was never returned.  The lost equipment is valued at around £100 and we will do our best to replace it in due course so that Grays & Ockendon, in particular, have the same training aids as Rainham students.

On a better note however, our latest support has gone to Sophie Richardson who has been selected to represent England at the forthcoming 35th Cadet & Junior European Championships in Triest, Italy in February.  It is a self-funding trip and we are pleased at the support shown from everyone at the club in contributing to raise funds to assist her.

Sophie was presented on Monday evening with a cheque from Sensei Barber for £250.00 towards her expenses.  This doesn't cover the full amount needed but goes a long way in helping and is added to the £200 donated by Liberata UK Ltd. Sophie is exploring other options to help raise a bit more herself.

In addition a big thank you must go to Martyn who persuaded his Company OEM to donate £100.00 and to Gary, who donated £25.00 to the club funds.

It's great to see everyone get behind Sophie, which just goes to show that we are all proud of her and wish her the best of luck out in Italy.

Thank you again to everyone for your contributions, the fund is an on-going thing and we will need your continued support at future efforts to raise monies to assist members when we are able to.

The club competition is on Sunday 3rd February 2008 at 1400 at Rainham Dojo. If you already put your details forward before Christmas, please ensure that you complete an entry form and hand it to your Sensei by Monday 28th January.

If you didn't enter before Christmas, but want to enter kata or kumite please ask your Sensei for a entry form and return it by Monday 28th January. You will need hand mitts (or you can borrow some) and a gum shield (you can't borrow these!) to fight. You may also wear a chest protector and/or groin guard if you have one.

The club competition is an ideal environment in which to experience fighting for the first time and is an important part of a students development. All junior students who know a kata are expected to compete.

English Karate Federation 29th September 2007

There's lots of news to be found on the web concerning the state of English karate and we do not tend to post anything here, preferring to concentrate on the club. However, a major development this week is that the English Karate Federation (EKF) has been granted provisional World Karate Federation approval. Ticky Donovan is the National Squad Director for the EKF and Ishinryu is therefore firmly behind the EKF. As a result, the EKF can select and send squads to WKF international events, the first being the World Junior & Cadet Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, at the end of October. The selections for the England squad take place at Bisham Abbey on Saturday 6th October.

Update from Sensei 16th February 2007

We’d like to start off by thanking all students, visitors, parents and friends for their support throughout last year, which is a big part of having a successful club.  We can only be strong if we all work together as a team to ensure the progress of all our members.  Each student is different and it is our aim to bring the best out of everyone, we work hard to help people reach their goals and your recognition of this is most appreciated.

2006 was another successful year, with Sophie and Mark in particular progressing in the competition field.  They will both strive to develop even further this year and we hope their efforts are justly rewarded.

The standard we set at the club served us well as many of you were successfully upgraded.  If you understand the General Grading system you will know it is not an easy task getting through the belts, it’s quite daunting too and we are proud that we are able to get our students through their belts with very few failures.  This is why sometimes although you may not understand our methods we hope you will trust our judgement which is based on vast experience in both competition and basic karate.  Well done to everyone who passed and especially to our four new black belts Dean, Sophie, Karl and Mark.

We now have a line dance group following on from us on a Friday evening and therefore we will need to finish on time and clear the hall promptly.  Therefore can students pay dojo fees at the start of the lesson and if you have anything you wish to discuss again please see us before the lesson starts.

Finally, Mark Hansford has reached the finals of the Havering Sports Awards having been nominated by his P.E. teacher.  The awards will take place Monday 18th February, Mark is the 3rd person from our club to reach the final and we hope he can win it for us this time.  Good luck Mark!
