Meopham Open 20th July 2008

Here is the latest news of Kata comp at Meopham today.

Victoria performed Pinan-Ich but 21 pts was not enough to medal in the top 4.

Holly and James were in the same category. Holly did Pinan-Ni and James did Pinan-Yon but like Victoria did not make the top 4.

Jamie was in the Cadet cat for the first time but his Empi was not enough to reach the semis.

Finally Luke performed Empi and was awarded 21pts. He then had to use Jion in a tie break which he won 3-0 on flags. In the semi-final his Empi was not quite enough to beat his opponents Goju-Shi-Ho-Sho going down 1-2 on flags and taking 3rd. The first medal of the day.

First up in Kumite was Holly. With a bye in the first round Holly was straight into the quarter finals. A good strong performance saw Holly progress into the final. Up against another Inshinryu competitor Holly took the lead and maintained it until the last 20 seconds. A Jodan Mawashi landed on Holly's shoulder. With three points awarded, Holly lost 7 - 5. A well deserved silver.

Next up Luke and James, in the same category. Luke was up first and started off well against a formidable opponent. However a stumble and a gyacku later, Luke was down 5 - 2. and was out. His opponent went on to win the category without conceding any more points.

James was up next and won his opening round 8 - 0 in under a minute. In his next fight James went 1 - 0 down and despite chasing his opponent around the mat, for the best part of minute he was unable to get the point back.

Although Luke and James were unable to medal all fighters put in a solid performance and showed great spirit and determination.

OVERALL 1 SILVER, 1 BRONZE

Squad: Holly Freeman, Victoria Rice, James Frewin, Luke Frewin, and Jamie Brown.

London Youth Games 29th June 2008

Sophie and Jamie competed at the London Youth Games today at Harrow Leisure Centre for their respective boroughs, Havering and Bexley.

Jamie competed in kata and kumite and was unlucky to meet the eventual finalists in the early rounds in both disciplines. Even though he got back in to the events through repecharge, he was unable to medal.

Sophie competed in kumite only and scored 22 points against 1 conceded over four fights to reach and win the final against another Havering team mate.

This win contributed to Havering girls taking the LYG title for the fourth year in a row whilst the boys team also won for the second year running.

EKF Southern Regional Championships 25th May 2008

Sophie and Holly were our only representatives today at the Southern Regionals held locally at Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham.

Holly took part in kata and kumite, whilst Sophie took part in three kumite categories.

Up first was Holly in kata - she performed Pinan Ni and Pinan Ich over three rounds to reach the final where she repeated Pinan Ich again to take the silver medal.

Holly then went on to fight in the under 35kg kumite category and was the smallest competitor here up against one of the tallest ones - she conceded a jodan mawash in the first few seconds but held her own and did not concede any further points but did not score any either. With no repecharge, there was no chance of a medal later in the event.

Sophie's first event of the day was the Ladies -53kg category - at the end of the first fight it was 3-3 and despite several punches in encho-sen being signalled by one of the judges in Sophie's favour, she was beaten when the referee scored against her.

She then took part in the Ladies -60kg category and received byes into the semi final, but was unable to overcome her opponent - However a bronze for her efforts.

Finally the Cadets -57kg saw another close fight which ended in defeat as Sophies opponent scored on the buzzer to take the fight 3-2.

Not such a good day for Sophie but Holly was pleased with her medal in what was her biggest competition to date.

OVERALL 1 SILVER, 1 BRONZE

Ishinryu Summer Open 11th May 2008

Organised by Upminster Ishinryu, this competition is a local one held at Harrow Lodge Sports Centre, Hornchurch. Due to its location, it gives the younger and lower grades a chance to compete with club support alongside them. It does not go on too long either, with the categories only for children and cadets. Of course, Sensei's Moira, Martyn and David were in attendance refereeing the various mats and Sophie was helping out coaching the younger ones

Danny Hayes and Ellie Freeman made their competitive debuts, in the respective male and female beginner to 7th kyu kata categories. Danny performed Taikyoko Sono Ichi in three rounds and did very well before going out in the quarter finals. Ellie performed the same kata and progressed through the first round before losing in the next on a split decison. Alongside Ellie was Victoria Rice who performed Pinan Ichi and she also got through the first round before losing out to the eventual winner in the next.

In the girls 6th to 4th kyu kata, Charley Stringer performed Pinan Ichi but did not progress. Holly Freeman was in the same category and earned our first medal of the day by reaching the semi finals by performing Pinan Ni and Pinan Ichi.

In the respective boys event, Ryan Jones performed Pinan Ichi but did not progress and Ryan Harkins made it through the first round with Pinan Ichi but his Taikyoko Sono Ichi was not enough to get through the second.

Next up were James Frewin and Harry "Elvis" Richardson in the boys 3rd to 2nd kyu kata. Harry performed Jihon to make the second round with a whole lotta leg shaking going on with the final kiba dachi but went out next round after performing Empi.  Unfortunately James' Pinan Ni was not enough to get him through the first round.

Finally, to finish the clubs involvement in the individual kata categories, Luke Frewin and Jamie Brown were together in the boys 1st kyu and Dan grade kata. Luke won through his first round with Empi to get to the semi final but could not overcome his opponent with Jihon, leaving him with bronze. Jamie was in the other half of the draw and had a bye directly into the semi final where he performed Empi - on this occasion the flags were split against him and he had to settle for the other bronze.

Harry, Luke and Jamie then took part in the team kata event. They had only had four lessons as a team and had to put togther a bunkai as well. There were four teams and their Jihon got them to the final where they performed Empi and the bunkai - the highlight if which was seeing Luke thrown by Jamie. Silver.

In the kumite, Holly was up in her respective height/grade category and reached the final with a solid display through three rounds. In the final she was edged narrowly 3-4 but showed good form in all her fights.

Ryan Harkins then had a bye in round one of his category and in the second round showed great spirit in attacking his opponent. However, his efforts went unrewarded and he did not progress further.

James scored 14 points against 3 conceded in the three rounds he fought to reach the final of his category, including an impressive jodan mawashi in the second fight. In the final, his opponent countered James' attacking moves to take gold and leave James with second place.

Finally Luke was one of only two competitors in his category and therefore went straight into the final. His opponent scored all his points from kicks and Luke was overcome to leave him with Silver.

Havering Youth Games / SENI 2008 27th April 2008

There were two competitions taking place this weekend at which the club had students at both. On Saturday the Havering Youth Games karate competition took place at Hornchurch Sports Centre. This event is part of the overall Havering Youth Games weekend in which various disciplines take part around the borough at various sports centres. This competition is only open to Havering residents and is used to select the Havering squad for the London Youth games in June.

This years event was attended by more karate ka than in recent years despite the SENI martial arts exhibition taking place a few miles away.

Luke and James took part in the kata event which was decided on points. James performed Pinan Ni and Luke performed Empi. Once the points had been added up, Luke had taken second place and the silver medal.

James is too young to select for the Havering squad but still took part in the kumite and despite taking two big kicks to the face he won his first fight 6-3. In the next fight, encho-sen ended with the score 2-2 and even though the flag judges scored 2-1 in James favour, the referee went with his opponent and James was out.

Luke had been unwell all week and decided not to compete at todays event.

Finally Sophie competed in the 50-55kg category and due to the numbers competing it was decided on a round robin basis. Sophie won a sluggish first fight 3-2 but stepped up a gear in the second fight to win 7-0 and take gold.

On Sunday, Jamie attended the karate event at the SENI exhibition in Londons ExCel arena. This exhibition covers a wide range of martial arts and several different competitions take place over the two days. Jamie competed in the kata event and performed Gankaku. However it was not enough to make it into the top four medal places which were dominated by the girls with some very strong katas.

Scottish International Open 19th April 2008

Sophie travelled up to Edinburgh today to compete in the Scottish International Open.

Due to the distance travelled, she entered the Female 16+ kata category and performed Bassai-Dai and Empi but was unable to progress further.

In the kumite she entered the cadets under 57kg category and the over 57kg category - unfortunately for her, they were on different mats at exactly the same time. In the under 57kg she started with a 8-0 win and had to change her pads and go straight onto the next mat where she lost 4-3 in the over 57kg category. As soon as this fight finished she had to run straight back to the under 57kg mat where she lost 1-0 after jogai'ing twice to award her opponent a single penalty point. By this time she was quite exhausted having fought continously for three fights with no break and to make matters worse, both opponents in each weight category did not progress meaning Sophie did not get a chance in repecharge.

The end of the day we thought, but the Toyakwai Karate Association female cadet team were one body short and Sophie was invited to join them. This event was fought on a round robin basis as there were only three teams and Sophie fought first, registering a 9-1 win inside 40 seconds against her Scottish opponent. The next TKA fighter won 3-0 meaning that they had to win their next round to secure gold.

They were up against another Scottish team and the first TKA fighter fought out a well earned 7-7 draw. The second TKA fighter lost 3-0 meaning that Sophie had to beat her opponent by 4 clear points to take gold. Or so we thought, as the referees then decided that the overall medal table for this event would be decided on total points scored and Sophie was up against the best of the three Scots girls. To take gold, Sophie had to beat her by 7 points and at 3-1 down with a minute left it looked an impossible task - however she then scored a further 9 unanswered points, all kazami's, the last scored with 2 seconds left,  to win 10-3 and take gold.

Of the 19 points she scored in the team event, 16 were from kazami's so it looks like Sensei Donovans last training session made an impact!!!!!

EKF Junior & Senior Championships 6th April 2008

The first EKF championships took place at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield over Saturday and Sunday this weekend. This championships is open to 3rd kyu and above and Luke, Jamie and Sophie (and Harry and James) all travelled up on Saturday morning to take part. Sensei Barber also travelled up to help officiate at the championships.

The event was vey well attended and free entry for the spectators swelled the numbers in the arena. Jamie was up first, choosing to take part in the kata only, to enable some studying to take place this weekend. After a first round bye, he took to the mat and performed Kanko-dai but his opponents kata was deemed to be stronger and he did not make the next round. Unfortunately this opponent did not make the final and therefore Jamie did not get another chance in repecharge.

Later in the day, Luke competed in the 10-11 year old boys under 45kg kumite. At 28kg, Luke was the smallest competitor in this category but this has never bothered him before and after an initial slow start he started to test his opponent. However, one gyaku found it's way through.Lukes defence and this was the only score of the fight. As the category progressed it was looking good for Luke to get back in through repecharge but his victor lost in the later rounds leaving Luke disappointed but a bit wiser. That was the end of day one so we retired to the local oriental hostelry where Luke celebrated his impending 12th birthday with chocolate cake and a dodgy "happy birthday to you"........

Lukes birthday arrived on Sunday with tales of snow in the south. Sophie was the only one competing and her first category was team fighting with two other Ishinryu cadets. The draw fell kindly for Ishinryu with a bye directly into the semi finals guaranteeing them at least a bronze medal - however one of the squad had pulled out and hadn't travelled to Sheffield and the other was stuck on the motorway and didn't arrive on time meaning that the team was disqualified.

Next up was the cadets under 51kg category - Sophie was one of three competitors in this category (it wasn't the smallest of the day) and she went straight into the final where she threw several kicks and combinations in the early stages but scored all her points with gyakus. She controlled the fight to win comfortably 5-3 and take the title - EKF Female Cadet under 51kg Champion.

Finally, and five hours later she took part in the cadets open weight category but fell at the first. Her opponent did not reach the final so no repecharge in this event.

It was good to see the national championships back on the calendar although the two days are long, especially for the younger competitors (and some of the older ones). The drive home in the snow was also particularly enjoyable.

Meopham Open 30th March 2008

A small squad travelled to Kent today to take part in the Meopham Open. This is an ideal event for younger students starting out in competition as being fairly local for the more experienced members of the squad.

Victoria and Holly were making their debuts in true Open competition, only having previously taken part in the club competition and the Ishinryus.

Victoria was up first in kata. Her performance of Pinan-Ichi scored her an impressive 21.1 and won the round. In the semi-final she overcame her opponent on flags 3-0, again with Pinan-Ichi. In the final she gained the club's first medal of the day, and the year - the gold, with Pinan-Ichi 2-1 on flags.

Next up Holly and James were in the same kata category. James performed Pinan-Ichi scoring 21.2 and Holly’s Pinan-Ni scored 20.9. James won the round with Holly needing to perform Pinan-Ichi in a tie-breaker to join James in the finals. They then met each other in the semi-final both opting for Pinan-Ni. On this occasion, James won through to the final 2-1 earning Holly bronze. In the final James took silver.

Jamie was our last competitor in the kata. His Empi was awarded 21.2 points, but on this occasion finished 5th, just outside the medal positions.

On to kumite and James found himself in a small category for a change. With only three competitors the organisers had decided that round robin was the best way forward. James was the first up and despite his smaller competitor showing great spirit in coming forward, James used his experience and won 3-1.

The other two boys fought next and James last opponent won 4-0, so James knew he had to win if he wanted gold. James again used his experience and found himself 1-0 up. With his opponent coming forward James picked his punches and won his second and last fight 3-1, which gave him a well deserved 1st place.

After waiting around for an hour or so Holly was up next and again this was a small category. Holly was one of the fighters who did not have bye in the first round. After normal time Holly was drawing 1-1 and with first to score tension was high. Holly’s backhand was poised and with a shout of "now" from Sensei Young a punch sealed the fight 2-1 to Holly.

Holly was starting to gain her confidence and won her next fight 3-0 to reach the final.

After a short rest period Holly was straight back on the mat. Her opponent managed to get under Holly’s guard and went up 1-0. Despite Holly’s best effort she was unable to get the point back and settled for a well deserved second place silver.

A good start for Victoria and Holly in their first open competition, both should be very proud with the effort they put in.

All competitors from the club thank Sensei Young for coaching on the day.
Who knows soon they may see him in action again!!

AMA International Open 24th February 2008

Sophie was our sole representative at this event which is held over two days. She travelled up on Sunday morning to compete in the cadet under 51kg and open weight kumite events.

Unfortunately Sophie was the only competitor at under 51kg and was added to the under 57kg pool, giving her an immediate weight disadvantage. After a first round bye, Sophie won her first fight and then came up against a Ukrainian fighter who she has met in the past. After conceding a  dubious chudan mawash early on Sophie could not overcome her opponent and with no repechage did not medal.

Next up was the open weight category and Sophie was by far the lightest here. The draw put her up against the same Ukrainian girl she had met earlier and this time the result was more emphatic in Sophie's opponents favour.

A disappointing competition for Sophie but better days to come. However we were witness to several things we had not seen before at a competition - an elbow to the back of the head in a senior category that was not questioned, a flag judge watching another fight and the referee stopping the fight for twenty seconds until the flag judge realised and the same flag judge arguing about a decision with the referee and then taking his anger out on the table people!!!!

35th European Cadet & Junior Championships 19th February 2008

This years championships were held in Trieste, North East Italy just on the Slovenian border. The England squad finally left Heathrow on Tuesday 12th February following a delay due to the fog and flew to Venice where they transferred by coach to Trieste. The EKF website will have a full report on the event - but we will concentrate on Sophie here.

The team stayed together in the same hotel and had a couple of training sessions before the event began on the Friday. Due to recent events, the hotel housing the Israeli team had a permanent police guard and as the England team were sharing a coach to the stadium with the Israeli's they had an armed police escort all the way after the coach had been through security checks.

At these championships there were 44 countries and 700 competitors in what was the largest European event for Cadets and Juniors hed so far.

Sophie's event was the female cadet under 51kg category which took place on the Saturday. There were 24 different nationalities competing against each other and due to the nature of the event, all competitors weighed in and changed in dedicated warm up areas and were escorted individually to their kumite areas. A completely different experience to any other event Sophie has attended.

Sitting in Sophies corner was Sensei Donovan as she entered the first round against an opponent from Montenegro. The first half of the fight was very cagey as both girls probed each others defences, resulting in Sophie receiving a warning for contact to the face. Sophie's opponent then tried a jodan mawash which Sophie blocked but she doubled up the kick and this one scored. After that Sophie kept chasing her opponent but was unable to land any scoring techniques and so the fight ended 0-3.

Unfortunately the Montenegran did not make the final and therefore Sophie did not get a chance to come back into the competition in repercharge.

Sophie was disappointed with her efforts as she is not used to going out of a competition in the first round. However, every fight here was like a final and there are no easy draws when every competitor has been selected by their country. She was not overwhelmed and should be proud of her efforts and as well as the experience, a few new friendships were also made.

Club competition 03 February 2008

The club competition for 2007 was finally held today at Rainham dojo after delays due to the Christmas break and unavailability of the dojo.

There was a good turnout by the junior students and their supporters - there were also a few students who had not experienced competition before so this gave them the ideal opportunity to do so. Senseis Moira, David and Martyn, with assistance from Sophie and Jamie, kept the mat flowing and the scores in order.

As is the norm, the kata competition was up first and we started with the lower grades up to and including 6th kyu. Victoria Rice was up first and performed Kette Taikyoko Sono Ni to set the tone. In their first competition Lee Collins, Patrick Collins and Danny Hayes all got through Taikyoko Sono Ni despite their nerves and to rapturous applause. Charley Stringer, Ryan Jones, Ryan Harkins and Josh Harris all performed Pinan Ich whilst Chioma Abazie and Emeka Abazie both performed Pinan Ni. At the end of the event, Charley was declared the winner, with Ryan Harkins taking second and Ryan Jones, third.

In the higher grade event there were a mixture of different katas on display. James Frewin and Holly Freeman performed Pinan Ni, Luke Frewin performed Empi, Hannah Tidy Pinan Goor, Carl Tidy and Harry Richardson Yantsu and Jamie Brown Gan Kyaku. After another round to decide the third place, the standings were Jamie Brown first, Luke Frewin second and James Frewin third.

Due to the numbers involved the kumite events were decided on a round robin basis. In the girls category, Hannah, Holly and Chioma all fought twice and all won one each leaving them all tied. However based on points scored Chioma took first, Holly second and Hannah third.

In the boys category, Harry, Luke, James, Emeka, Josh and Ryan Harkins all fought off against each other, having five fights each. Ryan, Josh and Emeka were the lower grades in this event and their opponents also had experience on their side. There were some hard fought battles on the mat and some hefty blows taken but everyone continued to the end. Harry was unbeaten in his five fights and took first with Luke second and James third.

Sensei Moira awarded the students their trophies and everyone who took part also received a medal.

Well done to everyone who took part, especially the lower grades for whom this was their first taste of competition karate. Hopefully the experience will encourage you to carry on to the next level.
